Taking the Reins New Research Report

Taking the Reins – NEW RESEARCH REPORT!

RDA Victoria joins with La Trobe University and Victorian State Government in research project

In 2019, RDA Victoria worked in conjunction with the Victorian State Government and researchers at La Trobe University to undertake a project titled: “Taking the Reins: an exploration of the impact of Therapeutic Horse-Riding programs on challenging behaviours and social engagement for riders with ASD and other developmental disorders.”
Volunteers and parents were interviewed to ascertain the impact of RDA programs on challenging behaviours and how the successful elements of RDA programs could be integrated into other sporting codes.
Themes emerged including being acknowledged as an individual; developing a sense of self and belonging; changes to social conduct; challenging limits; rider motivation/playing the game; RDA programs providing multiple therapies; and, broader advantages (including benefits to parents and volunteers).
